Each card shows a screenshot of the generated site next to the exact prompt that produced it, and a “Get started using this prompt” button that carries that prompt straight into the builder.
This is a smart touch for anyone who wants to see the AI’s range before committing to their own written description, since you can browse actual outputs instead of guessing what a good prompt looks like.
With a prompt ready, I clicked Get Started to see what came next. Before the AI generates a single page, Bluehost asks you to create an account.
The sign-up modal offers Google, Apple, or GitHub as one-click options, or a standard email form asking for your full name, email, phone number (optional), and a password.
The fine print at the bottom of this modal states the trial clock starts the moment you sign up and runs for 72 hours, not the 14 days advertised on the landing page.
I will come back to this gap in the pricing section, because it shows up again later in the build.
Account created, I landed straight in the builder with a blank preview pane waiting for my brief. This is where I put the tool to the actual test.
I wrote a prompt for a fictional Charleston, South Carolina family law practice, deliberately loading it with specific, sometimes conflicting instructions to see how the AI would handle nuance rather than a generic industry brief:
“I’m launching Harborview Family Law, a small family law practice in Charleston, South Carolina, focused on divorce, custody, and adoption cases. It’s just me and one associate attorney, and we work mostly with clients going through difficult personal situations, so I want the site to feel calm, trustworthy, and approachable rather than intimidating or overly corporate. I need a homepage, a page listing our practice areas, an attorney bios page, a client testimonials section, and a contact page with a form for scheduling a free consultation. Please avoid stock legal imagery like gavels and scales of justice, I want it to feel more human.”
As I typed, the AI actively rewrote and strengthened my draft in the box as I went, and the tool confirmed with “Great detail, let’s start” once I stopped typing, rather than asking me clarifying questions the way Bluehost’s own marketing claims it can (it says the AI can ask up to five targeted questions before building).
With a prompt this detailed, it appears to skip that clarifying step and go straight to building.
I started the build at 10:15 AM. The loading screen estimated up to five minutes and asked me not to close the tab, showing a live checklist of what it was doing: setting up the website structure, creating the core React files, importing Tailwind components, writing the stylesheet, and choosing typography (it landed on Playfair Display for headings and Poppins for body text).
The full build, landing on a finished homepage, was done by 10:17 AM, so about two minutes start to finish, well under the estimate on the loading screen.
The result was a four-page site: Home, Practice Areas, Attorneys, and Contact, each linked in a working navigation bar, not a single scrolling page pretending to be a full site.
That alone put it ahead of what I expected, since most AI website generators I have tested default to a one-pager unless you push them otherwise.
Against my prompt, here is where it landed:
Where it fell short of a publish-ready result: Some of the homepage stat blocks (150+ families supported, 99% client satisfaction, 20+ years combined experience) are exactly the kind of placeholder-sounding claims a small two-attorney practice would need to fact-check or remove before this site went live.
The testimonials read as plausible but generic, the sort of copy you would still want to replace with actual client language and consent before publishing.
Bluehost’s AI generation held up well against a deliberately specific and slightly awkward prompt. It built a working multi-page site in about two minutes, respected a negative instruction about imagery, and produced a homepage, practice area page, team bios, and a contact form without me asking for each one separately.
The copy still needs a human pass before you would put it in front of clients, particularly the statistics and testimonials, but the structure and tone were accurate to what I described.
With a finished draft in front of me, the next question was whether I was stuck with it. So I spent time poking around the editor to see how much control you actually have over the AI’s first draft, rather than being stuck with it.
Clicking “Edit” and then clicking any element on the page (a heading, a button, an image) selects it and attaches it to the chat panel on the left, so any follow-up instruction you type is scoped to that specific element.
A small toolbar appears above the selected element with a duplicate option, a “go to code” shortcut, and a delete option.

This is a level of manual control I did not expect from an AI-first builder. It plays closer to a page builder like Elementor than a chatbot that only takes instructions in plain language.
A separate theme panel, opened from a palette icon in the top bar, controls settings across the entire site rather than one element at a time: a color palette, font selection (the generated theme used Plus Jakarta Sans), corner radius presets, and shadow depth.
There is also a light and dark mode toggle here, and switching it updated every element on the page instantly, buttons, cards, and backgrounds all swapped to a dark theme with an orange accent color, without me having to touch anything manually.
Every change I made through direct clicking was mirrored in the chat log on the left as a “Latest Modification” entry, with a description of what changed, a Preview button, and a Code diff button showing the exact files that were added or edited.
There is also a Restore link that reverts the most recent change, functioning as a lightweight undo.
This means you can edit by clicking an element and describing a change, or by typing a full instruction into the chat with no element selected, and both paths update the same underlying site.
There are two separate ways to see the code behind your site, and they show you different things, so know which one you’re looking at before you rely on it.
Code diff, the button attached to each “Latest Modification” entry in the chat panel, is scoped to a single AI action. Click it and you get a list of only the files that change touched, each tagged “add,” “edit,” or similar, with the actual added or edited lines highlighted. This is a record of what the AI just did, not the whole site.
The code icon in the top bar opens something bigger. A full, persistent file browser for the entire project.
From here you can search files, open any component, hook, or stylesheet in the codebase, and read its complete current source, regardless of which AI change introduced it or when.
Browsing this way, I found React components organized by page, Tailwind CSS files, a main.tsx entry point, custom hooks, and even a WordPress ecommerce integration file that had been scaffolded in automatically, even though I never checked the “sell products online” box.
In short, Code diff answers “what did that last change actually touch,” while the top-bar code view answers “what does my entire site look like right now.”
If you’re planning to add custom code later, like a booking widget or an API integration, the top-bar view is the one to use, since it shows you the actual file structure you’d be working inside.
That confirms the generated site is an actual, readable codebase rather than a closed black box, though I would treat any manual code edits as something to test carefully against future AI-driven changes (I cover this exact question in the support section below, since I asked Bluehost’s own chat about it).
While I was in the code view during the editing tests, one detail stood out enough to pull into its own section. It’s a detail that separates this from closed AI builders like Wix or Squarespace. The site the AI generates runs on WordPress.
A dropdown in the top bar, marked with the WordPress logo, gives direct links to WP Admin, form submissions, and posts.
Once you open WP Admin, the standard WordPress toolbar (Customize, New, Comments, Caching, “Edit with BlueHost AI Builder”) confirms this is a standard WordPress install with the AI builder layered on top, not a separate proprietary system wearing a WordPress label.
Once I was happy with the edits, the last step was to see what actually happens when you try to take the site live. The in-app banner during my entire trial read “Your website is not live yet.
Upgrade now to publish and get your custom domain,” which reads as if publishing requires payment. Clicking the Publish button itself told a slightly different story. It generated a live, working temporary URL (a mybluehost.me subdomain) immediately, with a “Publish changes” button to push further edits to that same address, no upgrade required.
So the accurate read is that you can publish and share a working site on a Bluehost subdomain for free during the trial.
What actually requires upgrading is a custom domain of your own. The banner language does not make that distinction clear, and I would not blame a reader for assuming their work is locked away until they pay.
Separate from the in-editor experience is an Account Manager dashboard, reached by going “back to portal” from the top-bar menu. This is where your site list lives, along with a trial countdown (“Free trial, 3 of 3 days remaining”), an Upgrade button, and a Help dropdown with links to the knowledge base, phone support, and live chat.
I mention this because it’s not obvious from inside the AI editor that this separate portal exists, and it is the only place I found direct links to phone and chat support.
You can publish to a working, shareable link without paying, which the trial banner does not make obvious. Just know that a custom domain, and everything past the trial window, requires an upgrade, and that your support options live in a separate Account Manager dashboard rather than inside the editor itself.
Taken together, the build-to-publish flow is the strongest part of this product. From one written prompt, I had a four-page WordPress site, tone-matched copy, working navigation, and a shareable published link in under fifteen minutes, including the time it took to sign up and read through the editor.
What holds it back from a perfect score is not the AI itself.
It’s the messaging around it. A trial banner that undersells what you can do for free, a landing page that overstates the trial length, and a support system that lives outside the tool you’re actually building in. If Bluehost cleaned up that messaging, the underlying product would speak for itself.
Now that the build itself is out of the way, here’s what it actually costs to keep.
Bluehost’s AI Website Builder runs on two tiers:
The free trial tier gives you a temporary domain and five total AI edit credits, with every AI request (whether typed in chat or clicked on an element) using one credit.
The paid plan adds a free domain for the first year, domain privacy, free SSL, hosting for one website, a free CDN, weekly backups, malware detection and removal, and a larger monthly AI edit allowance with a bonus batch in your first month.
Here is the gap I would flag before you sign up. Bluehost’s own landing page advertises this as a “14-day free trial,” with an asterisk that clarifies the trial actually starts the day you sign up and “expires 72 hours later,” which is 3 days, not 14.
The in-app trial banner backs this up. It read “3 days remaining” from the moment I created my account, never 14. If you do not upgrade before that window closes, Bluehost gives you a 4-day grace period where your site stays saved but not live, before you would need to start over.
On refunds, check Bluehost’s own refund policy page before you commit to a paid plan. Standard Bluehost hosting products carry a 30-day money-back guarantee, but that guarantee explicitly does not apply to “AI Product and Services.”
AI products are listed separately as nonrefundable add-ons, alongside SSL certificates and domain privacy. In plain terms, once you upgrade to the paid AI Website Builder plan, there is no refund window at all, so build out your evaluation during the free trial rather than assuming you can reverse course after paying.

I asked it two pointed technical questions rather than something answerable by a help article title alone.
My first question: if I use the AI builder to generate a site, then later add custom code directly into a section (a JavaScript booking widget or an API integration), will that break the AI’s editing features going forward, or does the builder lock that section from future AI regeneration?

Each answer arrived within seconds, cited the specific knowledge base articles it pulled from, and offered a short list of related follow-up questions I could tap instead of typing. If a question is not resolved to your satisfaction, the interface points you to sign in and connect with a human agent rather than continuing with the AI.
Bluehost’s knowledge base opens on a “How can we help?” search bar with a handful of suggested questions, followed by a “Find information by topic” grid covering categories including Bluehost AI Products, Self-Managed VPS, WordPress, Yoast SEO, DNS, AI Website Builder, Email, cPanel, and Dedicated Server, each with a short list of sample articles and a link to view everything in that category.
I searched “website builder” to see how deep the coverage actually goes. The search returned an AI-written overview at the top of the page (a seven-point summary of what the builder does, sourced from three specific articles, with a thumbs up or down feedback option and a prompt to sign in if you want a live agent instead), followed by 123 traditional search results with filters by category and read-time estimates.
I opened one of the top results, “Bluehost AI Website Builder How-To Videos,” to check article quality directly.

That covers everything I tested, from the first prompt to the support desk. Here’s where I landed. Yes, with a clear sense of who it fits.
