Hi Brian. I'm really sorry that you went through that. We always do everything we can to help a customer remedy any difficulties they might be having. If you were quoted $159 for domain renewal, that means your domain was in the "redemption period" (which is part of the domain deletion process and it is set by the registrar, not us, as is the high cost to retrieve the domain). But it takes 85 days for a domain to get to the redemption period, so your timeline seems to be missing a few months when your domain did not work but you didn't contact us to renew it.
That happens, we don't always notice when a domain stops working. But we send out a lot of email both before and after a domain expiration, specifically to prevent a situation like this. I'm sorry that you had difficulty with a renewal complicated by a credit card expiration. But it isn't possible to lose a domain in 5 days. We can renew it for the normal price any time before the redemption period, which, again, is 85 days after a domain expires and stops working.
